Plumbers - Sometimes You Can't Do Without Them

Have you ever had a plumbing emergency, a time when your really needed a skilled and reliable plumber yesterday if not sooner? What follows is a true story of a man who found himself in just such a situation. The names and locale have been changed to protect the hapless, and I've used my imagination to fill in some of the details, but the essential facts of this story are true and unexaggerated.
Santa Barbara resident Chad Miller spent that typically beautiful Sunday afternoon on his front lawn, contentedly polishing his brand new Harley Davidson XR 1200 Sporster, burnishing the chrome work to remove every little smudge or fingerprint. He didn't reply to the admiring comments of the odd neighbor who happened by, but only smiled and nodded, doing his best to conceal the pride he felt in his new machine, resplendent in its mirage orange pearl paint job.
Owning a Harley had been a long-held dream of Chad's, but he'd always considered them to be out of his price range. His wife, Valerie, definitely considered a Harley to be out of Chad's price range and, as she never failed to add, he was "just not a Harley kind of guy," in her estimation. Bruce Willis looked good on a Harley, Valerie insisted, but Chad would not.
His wife's opinion of his Harley props notwithstanding, Chad quietly put aside a few dollars each month until he'd saved up more than enough for a down payment. He'd plopped it down at the local Harley dealership that morning, and after filling out all the paperwork, become the proud owner of a shiny new hog.
As he continued his meticulous polishing, and Valerie silently smoldered inside the house, Chad's neighbor Richard Sheckler strolled up. "Nice bike," he said. Chad put down his polishing rag, allowed himself a small grin and replied, "She's a real beauty, isn't she?" "Sure is" agreed Richard. "Hey, how about firing her up? I'd love to hear how she sounds. There's nothing like the sound of a Harley engine."
That sounded like a great idea to Chad. He straightened up, and standing next to the motorcycle, which was propped up on its center stand, turned the ignition key. The bike responded with its signature low-register Harley rumble. Chad, positively beaming now, patted the seat of the bike and accidentally hit the gear change pedal with his leg. The bike popped into gear, rocked back on its center stand until the rear tire made contact with the grass of the front lawn and, to Chad and Richard's horror, took off across the lawn, through the living room's plate glass window, down the hallway, through the open bathroom door, and straight into the toilet, the bowl of which was shattered by the impact of the 573 pound motorcycle.
Chad clearly needed to call a plumber, as well as a few other professionals--not the least of which might be a marriage counselor.
